Laser Dentistry

Are you experiencing symptoms of gum disease such as inflammation, pain, or bleeding?

Dr. Bradley H. Reiner in Vero Beach, FL, uses laser dentistry for treatment that is more comfortable and precise than traditional methods.

Let's take a closer look at how our dentist can restore your health using lasers for a faster recovery with minimized risks.

Enhanced Gum Disease Treatment With Laser Dentistry

Dr. Reiner in Vero Beach, FL, is certified to perform laser gum surgery using the state-of-the-art Periolase® laser. Periodontitis (moderate to advanced gum disease) causes gum tissue to pull away from the teeth, which can cause a domino effect of oral health issues including tooth loss and jawbone deterioration. Periolase eliminates the need for scalpels and sutures when treating periodontitis because it uses laser energy to eliminate bacteria and promote the reattachment of the soft tissue when pockets form between the gums and teeth.

6 Important Benefits of Laser Dentistry

Number one

A More Pleasant Experience

If you hate the thought of your dentist using scalpels and sutures to treat your gums, you can relax knowing that Periolase can make these traditional tools unnecessary.

Number two

Reduced Infection Risk

Our lasers sterilize the procedure area as they work, killing bacteria in the process.

Number three

Conservative Treatment

The accuracy of laser dentistry means less healthy tissue is disturbed during treatment.

Number four

Reduced Bleeding

Dr. Reiner's laser cauterizes incisions during treatment, so bleeding is greatly reduced.

Number five

No Sutures

The cauterizing effect also means you probably won't need sutures, or a special visit to our Vero Beach, FL, practice to have sutures removed.

Number six

Faster Recovery

Laser treatment can stimulate tissue to grow back faster while reducing post-procedure pain and inflammation.

Laser ENAP / LPT / Laser ANAP

Commonly known as the LANAP protocol

A) Perio probe indicates excessive pocket depth

B) Laser radiation vaporizes bacteria, diseased tissue, pathologic proteins, and alerts the practitioner to the presence of tartar

C) Ultrasonic scaler and special hand instruments are used to remove root surface accretions

D) Laser finishes debriding pocket and aids in hemostasis

E) Reattachment of rete ridges to clean root surface, with a stable fibrin clot at the gingival crest to create a "closed system"

F) Occlusal trauma adjusted

G) New attachment is regenerated

Using Laser Dentistry to Treat Gum Disease

Don't put off getting dental treatment for serious issues like gum disease. Your overall health could be at risk. Contact Dr. Reiner at Reiner Family Dental in Vero Beach, FL, to learn more about this exciting dental technology.

Laser Gum Disease Treatment: Step by Step

LANAP (laser-assisted new attachment procedure) is typically completed in two office visits, one for either side of the mouth. There is usually about a week between the two sessions. Here is what to expect, from your first treatment to your recovery:

Removal of Bacteria

The laser will be used to vaporize bacteria and compromised soft tissue, while revealing any tartar buildup.

Tartar Removal

If needed, ultrasonic tools and other instruments may be used to remove any tartar that has accumulated in the treatment areas.

Further Laser Treatment

Next, the laser will be used to debride the treatment area, meaning any remaining compromised tissue or bacteria will be vaporized. At this point, the laser will also be used to stop any bleeding by cauterizing the treatment site.

Recovery

For the first couple of days after treatment, some discomfort is normal. Over-the-counter pain meds can control any soreness you experience. For the first week to 10 days, you will not brush or floss. Instead, you will use a special mouth rinse to avoid disrupting the treatment site. During that time, you will also need to eat a soft food diet.

Is Laser Gum Disease Treatment Right for Me?

If your gum disease has reached a moderate or severe level, LANAP can probably benefit you. Meanwhile, if the thought of treatment that uses scalpels and sutures makes you feel anxious, this treatment can be a great way to help you feel comfortable in the dentist's chair while getting the treatment you need. While traditional methods may require patients who take blood thinners to stop taking their meds for a while, LANAP does not.

The surest way to know whether LANAP can help you overcome moderate to advanced gum disease with improved comfort, minimized risks, and a faster recovery is to get in touch with our office serving Vero Beach and surrounding communities. Dr. Reiner will conduct a careful analysis of your oral health to determine if this is the best way to restore the health of your smile.
